Devastating

In the summer of 2001 i went on a long cycling trip up the north east coast of japan, starting from Sendai and going up through Kesennuma into Iwate prefecture and Aomori. These photos are from the Matsushima area, just north of Sendai. It is one of the most beautiful areas i have ever seen and is one of the areas most devastated by the tsunami. I'm afraid to think how it looks right now.
Going through my travel journal is just heart breaking. Reading and remembering all the amazing experiences i had in Sendai, matsushima, Nobiru, Ishinomaki, Onagawa, Minami Sanriku, Kesennuma, Hachinohe, and the countless little picturesque... fishing villages along the way. I'm horrified after Googling these places or seeing them on TV, and realizing how they look now. Even worse than the fact that this was one of the most overwhelmingly beautiful areas i have ever been to, is remembering all the wonderful people i met there: Cool funny old timers who invited me for beers and funny conversations, fun loving students, old motherly inn keepers, friendly families and adorable children.
This blog is dedicated to all those wonderful people and the amazing region that used to be, and will hopefully be again. Through this blog i will try to tell the story of my cycling trip through the region ten years ago and hopefuly interest more people in my upcoming planed trip back to one of my favorite places on earth.
